CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: Jeffrey Thomas (1933-1989), QC, was born on 12 November 1933, the son of John James Thomas and Phyllis Thomas (nee Hile). He was educated at Abertillery Grammar School, Monmouthshire, and Kings College, London, was called to the Bar at Grays Inn in 1957, and was Recorder of the Crown Court from 1975. In 1960 he married Margaret Jenkins, and married his second wife, Valerie Ellerington, in 1987. He unsuccessfully contested Barry in 1966 as a Labour candidate, before serving as MP for Abertillery, 1970-1983 (Labour 1970-1981 and SDP 1981-1983). He became PPS to the Secretary of State for Wales, 1977-1979, and opposition spokesman on legal affairs, 1979-1981. He was SDP spokesman on legal affairs, 1981-1983, and unsuccessfully contested Cardiff West in 1983 as the SDP/Liberal alliance candidate. He rejoined the Labour Party in 1986.

CONTENT

Scope and content/abstract: The papers of Jeffrey Thomas, 1936-1987, in two groups. The first consists of papers, 1936-1987, including Welsh affairs, 1972-1983, local affairs, 1973-1982, legal matters, 1978-1980, foreign affairs, 1978-1981, domestic politics, 1978-1982, Social Democratic Party, 1981-1985, and Labour Party, 1986-1987. The second group consists of scrapbooks relating to Jeffrey Thomas's general election campaigns in Barry and Abertillery, 1966-1979; scrapbooks relating to Jeffrey and Margaret Thomas's work in the Abertillery constituency, 1970-1976; and other political and personal papers.

System of arrangement: The first group is arranged into local affairs, Welsh affairs, domestic politics, legal matters, foreign affairs, Social Democratic Party, and miscellaneous. The second is arranged into three series: Abertillery constituency duties, general election campaigns, and other political and personal papers.

Immediate source of acquisition: Received in two groups, the first donated by his widow, Valerie Thomas, Whitebrook, near Monmouth in May 1990, and the second by his first wife, Margaret Thomas, London, April-June 2000.
