Administrative/Biographical history: The Newport West constituency was created in 1983 and was formerly part of Newport. The seat was held by Mark Robinson, a Conservative MP, from 1983 to 1987. Paul Flynn was elected Labour MP for Newport West in 1987 and has remained in his seat to date (December 2001). He was a member of Newport County Borough Council from 1972 to 1981 and became Deputy Leader of the Council in 1980. He served as a Gwent County Councillor from 1974 to 1983, and in 1984 became a researcher for Llew Smith, the Labour MEP for South East Wales. Councillor David J. Mayer, constituency agent to Mr Paul Flynn, is a member of the Newport County Borough Council Labour Group, representing the Malpas ward. The Newport County Borough Council is a unitary authority formed in 1996, which has a large majority of Labour councillors. The papers reflect the activities of the Labour Party in the Newport West constituency and in the Malpas ward; the Newport County Borough Council Labour Group, and the Manufacturing, Science and Finance Union (MSF).


Scope and content/abstract: Papers, 1966-2001, relating to the Newport West Labour Party; the Newport County Borough Council Labour Group; the Manufacturing, Science and Finance Union (MSF), Newport 9909 Branch; the South East Wales European Constituency Labour Party, and various election campaigns, including correspondence, minutes, financial records, reports and material relating to election campaigns.

System of arrangement: Arranged into two groups: donations received between May 1989 and Dec. 1998 (further arranged into ten series); and donations received in June and August 2001 (further arranged into five series).

Conditions governing access: The written permission of the constituency agent is required to consult the papers for a period of fifteen years from the last date of the file. Readers consulting modern papers in the National Library of Wales are required to sign the 'Modern papers - data protection' form.
