CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: The Llysdinam estate was owned by the Venables family of Llysdinam, Newbridge-on-Wye, Breconshire, which descended from Joseph Venables of Llysdinam, who married Elizabeth Davies in 1723. Their second son, Lazarus, succeeded to the estate and married Elizabeth Jones of Woodhill, Shropshire, in 1771. Their heir was Richard Venables (1774-1858), archdeacon of Carmarthen and vicar of Clyro 1811-1846, who married Sophia Lister of Girsby House, Lincolnshire. Their heir was Richard Lister Venables (1809-94), vicar of Clyro and Bettws Clyro, who married firstly, Mary Augusta Dalrymple Adam, daughter of General Alexander Poltaratzky. His second wife was Agnes Minna Pearson. His heir from his second marriage was Katherine Minna (b. 1870) who married Charles Leyshon Dillwyn-Venables-Llewelyn, 2nd baronet in 1893. He assumed the additional surname of Venables by royal licence in 1893. The Llysdinam estate was therefore added to the Penllergaer and Ynis-y-gerwn estates, Glamorgan, which were already held by the Dillwyn-Llewelyn family.
