Administrative/Biographical history: The Edwards family descended from Iddon ap Rhys Sais of Cilhendre, Shropshire, adopting the surname Edwards in the early sixteenth century. Thomas Edwards (1592-1667) of Cilhendre and Plas Yolyn, was one of the civilian envoys deputed by Thomas Mytton to negotiate the surrender of Anglesey (May-June 1646) and Harlech (March 1647). His fellow envoy was John Jones 'the Regicide'. He also served as governor of Wrexham in 1647. He was the father of Thomas Edwards (d. 1668), who married John Jones's niece, daughter of Watkin Kyffin, who was estate agent of the Chirk Castle estate. His heiress, Julie, married John Morrall. Josiah Morrall of Holywell, surgeon, owner of Plas Yolyn, left debts of £1,400 at his death in 1745. His widow, Margaret, sold the estate to William Challnor of Cilhendre, Dudleston, Shropshire in 1748. Cilhendre was demolished in 1794.

Scope and content/abstract: Manuscripts, estate records and family papers of the Edwards and Morrall families of Cilhendre and Plas Yolyn in Dudleston, Shropshire, including the manuscripts and papers of Morgan Llwyd (1619-1659); Colonel John Jones 'the regicide' of Maesgarnedd (?1597-1660); correspondence of the Edwards and Morrall families; papers of the Jones family of Cilhendre, descendants of Col John Jones; a small group of papers relating to the Hanmer family (including documents relating to the part played by William Hanmer of Fennes in the Civil War and a travel journal of Thomas Hanmer, 1728); and deeds, 1282-1869 relating to properties mainly in Denbighshire, Flint, Merionethshire and Shropshire, but also in London, Oxfordshire and Wiltshire.

Conditions governing reproduction:

Finding aids: The catalogue can be accessed online. A hard copy of the catalogue to the manuscripts is available in NLW, Handlist of manuscripts, vol. 4. Hard copies of a superseded but more detailed catalogue to the manuscripts are avalable at NLW and HMC.

Appraisal, destruction and scheduling information: All records deposited at NLW have been retained.

Accruals: Accruals are not expected.

Archival history: The papers of Morgan Llwyd and John Jones 'the Regicide' were not originally part of the archive of the Edwards family of Plas Yolyn but are linked via John Jones, the 'Regicide's son by his first wife, Margaret, daughter of John Edwards of Stansty. John Jones lived for some years at Bryn y Ffynnon in Wrexham, where Morgan Llwyd had previously resided, and he spent the later years of his life with his cousins, the Edwards family of Cilhendre, to whose estates the Morrall family succeeded in about 1730.

Immediate source of acquisition: The first group was purchased from M. Cyrus Roger Morrall of Plas Yolyn, December 1937 (NLW MSS 11430-11481 and Plas Yolyn 1-426). A further group was donated by Mr & Mrs Roger Curteis of Plas Yolyn, March 2007 (Plas Yolyn 427-483).

Related material: Deeds relating to lands acquired by John Jones 'the Regicide' can be found within NLW, Peniarth Estate Papers.
