CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: Sir Thomas Mansel Franklen (1840-1928), antiquary, was born in Swansea. He graduated from Oxford in 1861, and was called to the Bar from Lincoln's Inn in 1865. In 1878, he became Clerk of the Peace in Glamorgan, and in 1889, Clerk to the Glamorgan County Council. He amassed a collection of papers relating to the history of Glamorgan, including material collected by the Rev. John Montgomery Traherne, G. T. Clark and William Davies.

CONTENT

Scope and content/abstract: Deeds and documents, [1600]-[1810], mainly relating to the counties of Northampton, Hertford and Surrey, together with an account book, 1786-1793, relating to the Franklen estate in South Wales.

Appraisal, destruction and scheduling information: All records donated to the National Library of Wales have been retained.

Accruals: Accruals are not expected.

Archival history: Mansel Franklen acquired the papers of G. T. Clark and the Rev. John Montgomery Traherne, both of whom had collected a large number of documents relating to the history of Glamorgan.

Immediate source of acquisition: Donated to the National Library of Wales by Lady Mansel Franklen, St. Hilary, Cowbridge, 1928-1929.
