CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: In the early 17th century Maesgwynne in the parish of Llanboidy, Carmarthenshire, was owned by the Howell family. The last of the line, Walter Rice Howell (1724-1789),who died unmarried, bequeathed the estate to his godson, Walter Powell, a Bristol drysalter. He was succeeded by his only son, Walter Rice Howell Powell (1796-1834), the estate then passing to his son, also named Walter Rice Howell Powell (1819-1889). In 1873 the estate comprised 3,468 acres.

Scope and content/abstract: Deeds, probate records, family settlements, etc., 1565-1888, relating to the Howell and Powell family and their Maesgwynne estate in Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire, 1565-1888.
