He remained connected with the militia and the army until after World War 1, and served Monmouthshire as a Justice of the Peace, county councillor, sheriff and Deputy Lieutenant. He was also a member of the Court and Council of the National Library of Wales, of the Court of the National Museum of Wales, and of the Royal Commission on Ancient Monuments in Wales, and was knighted in 1924, having been made a CB in 1911. He was a Latin scholar, and is best known for his work on many aspects of the history of Monmouthshire, to which he devoted much of his later life.
