Administrative/Biographical history: Gwilym Owen Williams was born on the 23rd of March 1913. He was educated at Llanberis Grammar School and at Jesus College, Oxford, where he graduated with first class honours in English in 1933, and in theology in 1935. He received his MA in 1937, a doctorate in divinity from Lambeth in 1957, and an honorary doctorate in divinity from the University of Wales in 1985. Williams was ordained as a deacon in 1937, and as a priest the following year. From 1937 to 1940, he acted as curate for St. Asaph, Denbighshire. In 1940, he was appointed chaplain and temporary lecturer in theology at St. David's College, Lampeter, where he remained until 1945, marrying his wife Megan in 1941. He left to take up the position of chaplain and tutor at St. Mary's College, Bangor, along with a post as Lecturer in Theology at the University of Wales, Bangor. In 1947, Williams was made a Canon of the Cathedral of Bangor, but he left the city in 1948 to become Warden and Headmaster of Llandovery College. He was nominated for the post of Principal at St. David's College, Lampeter, in 1953, but refused to leave Llandovery at what was a crucial point in its development as an institution. In 1957 he was elected Bishop of Bangor, becoming Archbishop of Wales in 1971. He held both positions until his retirement in 1982. Williams published The Church's Work in 1959. In 1965 he became a Sub-Prelate of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, and in 1972 he was made a Fellow of Jesus College, Oxford. He died on December 23rd, 1990.
