The LMS was an amalgamation of the London & North Western Railway (including the Lancashire & Yorkshire, with which it had already made a preliminary amalgamation) and Midland Railways in England; the Caledonian, Glasgow & South Western, and Highland railways in Scotland; and two further companies in Ireland. The LMS was nationalised to become part of British Rail in 1948.
