CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: The Rev. Percy Mordaunt Barnard (1868-1941) of Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent, was an antiquarian bookseller. He accumulated a collection of title deeds and papers relating to properties in Monmouthshire, presumably in the course of his bookselling business; most of the collection appears to derive from the Kemeys family of Bertholey, Llantrisant, Monmouthshire.

CONTENT

Scope and content/abstract: Deeds and documents mainly concerning the Kemeys family of Bertholey, parish of Llantrisant, Monmouthshire, Oystermouth, Glamorgan, and elsewhere, 1481-1780; letter from Lord Arthur Capel to Colonel Davyes at Hawarden, 1643, and an account of the raising of the siege of Montgomery Castle, 1644.

Archival history: The deeds appear to have a close affiliation to the Monmouthshire deeds in the Frederick Holland Collection, also in NLW.

Archivist's note: Compiled by Seri Crawley for the ANW Project. The following sources were used in the compilation of this description: NLW Schedule, P. M. Barnard Collection of Monmouthshire Deeds. The cataloguer noted that the account of the raising of the siege of Montgomery Castle, 1644 is important in that it differs in detail from other documents regarding the siege published in Montgomery Collections XXII.
