Administrative/Biographical history: Albert Tilley (1896-1957), mace-bearer of Brecon cathedral, was born in Widnes, Lancashire. After being wounded on the Somme in 1916, he was sent to Brecon to recuperate, and remained there for the rest of his life, becoming the first mace-bearer of the new cathedral there in 1923. He steeped himself in the history of the cathedral, town and county of Brecon, and collected many historical records in the course of his research.


Scope and content/abstract: Deeds, 1815-1931, relating to the manor of Llanfihangel Talyllyn and other properties in Brecknockshire, together with a court book, 1859-1908, of the manor of Llanfihangel Talyllyn; notebooks and exercise books, containing notes on historical, genealogical, and heraldic material mainly about the town and county of Brecon, taken from various printed and manuscript sources; notes and sketches relating to the armorial bearings of Brecknockshire families, and extensive transcripts of parish registers and of monumental inscriptions; a file of typescript notes concerning the Breconshire Agricultural Society; some notes in the hand of John Lloyd compiled in pursuance of his historical researches; a file of notes, transcripts, and correspondence relating to the parish of Llanfeugan; a manuscript volume, compiled c. 1880, of transcripts of inscriptions, sometimes with additional notes and sketches, of tablets and monuments in Brecknockshire churches and a few Nonconformist chapels, drawings of archaeological remains, etc.; a further file of transcripts of monumental inscriptions in several Breconshire churches and churchyards; a scrap- book of newspaper cuttings relating to the Turco-Greek war of 1897; and a group of eleven deeds, mainly of Brecknockshire interest, 17th-19th cent.

Appraisal, destruction and scheduling information: All records donated to the National Library of Wales have been retained.

Accruals: Accruals are not expected.

Archival history: Tilley acquired the deeds from an unknown source, apparently in the course of his private research. Notes by John Lloyd, the Breconshire antiquary, also came into his hands.
