Administrative/Biographical history: Mrs. Phoebe Joyce Evans (1890-), Swansea, was a missionary in Madagascar between 1914 and 1939, where she met her husband, the Reverend William Evans.


Scope and content/abstract: Papers of Mrs. Phoebe Joyce Evans, comprising diaries, 1906-1984, some of which contain accounts of visits to France, Poland, Belgium, Madagascar, Port Said, the United States of America, and various places in England, and including a diary of her husband, Rev. William Evans and a diary on cassette; letters, 1913-1938, from Phoebe Joyce Evans, in the form of diaries, to family and friends from Madagascar and to her from her husband; miscellaneous papers, [1906x1981], including notes and texts of talks given, accounts of visits to America in 1959 and 1971, extracts from diaries, letters and newspaper cuttings; together with autobiographical notes, c. 1900, by [?the Reverend William Evans].

Conditions governing access: The diaries cannot be consulted until 2009. Made available for consultation following the Freedom of Information Act from January 2005. Readers consulting modern papers in the National Library of Wales are required to sign the 'Modern papers - data protection' form.

Immediate source of acquisition: Donated by Mrs P. J. Evans, Swansea, September 1981, November 1981, January and June 1982, October 1983 and August 1984.


Related material: Photographs of Mrs Evans have been transferred to NLW, Photographic Collection (PE 1325-6) and a diary on cassette is held in the NLW, National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales (CM 1006). A copy of Mrs Evans's autobiography is NLW, Facs 219.
