Administrative/Biographical history: Chris Bendon, poet and author, was born in Leeds, Yorkshire, in 1950. He studied English at St David's University College, Lampeter, Cardiganshire, and lived in Wales from 1977 until his death in 2011. He edited Spectrum magazine, 1982-1985, and published work as the Spectrum Press. His published volumes include Constructions (Llandysul, 1991), A Dyfed Quartet (Ruthin, 1992), Jewry (Salzburg, 1995) and the drama Crossover (Salzburg, 1996).

Scope and content/abstract: Papers of Chris Bendon comprising typescript copies of his poetry, including `Jewry: a Poetry Collection', [1995] and `Winter Sun: a Poetry Collection', as well as unpublished poems, prose poems (or 'prosems'), juvenilia, prose, drama, and a typescript copy of 'Crossover: a Play on Words or Libretto for an Imaginary Opera', together with a collection of anthologies, magazines, periodicals and journals, and also diaries (described by Chris Bendon as 'medico-legal'), mostly comprising details of medical and social problems and the minutiae of everyday life, as well as other papers collected during his literary activities.

Language/scripts of material: English

System of arrangement: Arranged as found. Chris Bendon devised his own filing system, but this broke down over time, and it has not been retained. Files may now be requested according to the box in which they are kept (Boxes 1-9), rather than Chris Bendon's system. The old numbers are still clearly visible, however: most of the items within boxes were numbered by Chris Bendon in the series 1-11, 12/1-8, 13-14, and boxes 10-14, 15i-ii, 16, with some items having no number, and some numbers being applied to more than one item.

Conditions governing access: The diaries are not available without the written permission of Chris Bendon's daughter, Cara Bendon. Readers consulting modern papers in the National Library of Wales are required to sign the 'Modern papers - data protection' form.

Conditions governing reproduction: Copyright belongs to Chris Bendon's daughter, Cara Bendon.

Finding aids: The catalogue is available online.
