Administrative/Biographical history: Thomas Mervyn Jones (1910-1989), public servant, was born in Llandinam, Montgomeryshire and educated in Newtown and at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, and Cambridge University. After training as a lawyer and working in local government in Newport, Monmouthshire, he was appointed chairman of the Wales Gas Board in 1948, and of the Wales Tourist Board in 1970. He retired in 1976, and died in 1989 after compiling his memoirs.


Scope and content/abstract: Papers of Thomas Mervyn Jones, comprising his typescript memoirs which focus mainly on his academic career, his time in local government and as chairman of the Wales Gas Board, 1948-1970, and the Wales Tourist Board, 1970-1976, together with papers used by him in compiling them, including personal correspondence, reports, newspaper cuttings and other papers, and biographical material relating to his family, 1888-1985, as well as material relating to the history of Llandinam and the Davies family, and Jones's thoughts on various aspects of development in Wales, such as the nationalised industries and economic development, agriculture, the arts, government involvement in industry, and devolution.
