Administrative/Biographical history: The Ottley family originated in Yorkshire in the sixteenth century, but a substantial branch was established in the West Indies from the early eighteenth century, and possibly before. Many members of the family held office in the legislature, judicature, military and church in the British West Indies, especially St Kitts, Nevis, Antigua, St Vincent, Grenada and St Christopher. The family is related to the Ottleys of Pitchford Hall, Shropshire.


Scope and content/abstract: Papers, 1747-1948, of the Ottley family, including several pedigrees, one traced back to Arthur Ottley (c.1649-1705) of the island of St Christopher; two wash drawings, both panoramas of Antigua, apparently in the 1770s; miscellaneous family papers, 1747-1948, including a copy of proceedings in causes in the courts of common pleas and errors, island of St Vincent, 1768, probate records, records of the military careers of family members around the world, photographs and copies of portraits; and material of genealogical interest concerning the history of the Ottley and other related families.
