CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: Dr Leslie Wynne Evans (1911-1985) was Reader in the Department of Education, University College, Cardiff, Glamorgan. He researched into industry in South Wales, focusing on metalworking industries in Carmarthenshire, and the history of education in Wales. His PhD, completed in 1953, was concerned with the Works Schools of the industrial revolution in Wales. His research included the work of Sir John Herbert Lewis (1858-1933), Liberal MP, and Sir Alfred T. Davies, (1861-1949), the first Permanent Secretary to the Welsh Department of the Board of Education. Dr Evans contributed to the second volume of A History of Carmarthenshire, edited by J. E. Lloyd, in 1939. He also published Education in Industrial Wales: 1700-1900 (1971), and Studies in Welsh education, 1880-1925 (1974). He became a member of the National Geographic Society in 1955. He was married to Megan Wynne Evans; he died in 1985.

ARCHIVAL INFORMATION

Appraisal, destruction and scheduling information: All records deposited at the National Library of Wales have been retained.

Archival history: The archive includes material loaned by Mrs Kitty Idwal Jones to Dr Leslie Wynne Evans, 1916-1923, relating primarily to her father, Sir John Herbert Lewis, and his work as Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education, and further correspondence, 1907-1911, from O. M. Edwards, discussing his work as the first Chief Inspector of Schools in Wales. These were evidently not returned to Mrs Jones, and were among the papers of Leslie Wynne Evans donated to the NLW in November 1985 by Mrs Megan Wynne Evans, following her husband's death.

Immediate source of acquisition: Deposited by his widow, Mrs Megan Wynne Evans, Cardiff, 1986.
