CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: Following the passing of the Wales Act 1978 enabling devolution, the Labour government held a referendum on whether its provisions should be implemented. The "No Assembly" Campaign was organised to campaign for a 'no' vote in the Devolution Referendum for Wales of 1st March 1979. The referendum proved a major defeat for the pro-devolution cause. The chairman of the campaign was the Conservative politician, Lord Gibson-Watt (1918-2002), but membership was drawn from across the parties.
