Administrative/Biographical history: John Alaska Davies was a schoolmaster at a number of schools in the Llandysul area, but spent most of his career at Capel Dewi.


Scope and content/abstract: There are 307 diaries kept by John Alaska Davies, 1914-1995 (frequently there is more than one diary for each year). They include entries relating to his work as a teacher; sermons and ministers; Welsh religious services broadcast on the radio; observations on the weather and temperature (the highest and the lowest temperatures are regularly noted); nature; gardening; local events; prisoners-of-war from Italy; food rationing; sport; books which he has read; and films. There is also notebooks; a diary, 1915, kept by his father Thomas Davies (d. 1916); a diary, 1915, kept by his sister Rachel Ann Davies, with substantial entries also by John Alaska Davies; and the diary of his son Geraint, 1942, who lost his life in an air accident aged nineteen years.

Archival history:

Immediate source of acquisition: The diaries were presented as a bequest through John Alaska Davies's niece, Mrs Mattie Sulwen Jones, Bryncelyn, Llandysul, in November 1999.


Publication note: Extracts from the diaries, 1914-1945, were published regularly in Y Garthen, the community newspaper for the Llandysul area, 1995-1999, transcribed by Roy Davies, a relative to John Alaska Davies.
