Administrative/Biographical history: Donald Gwyon Howells (d. 1997) was formerly a lecturer in Celtic Languages at Glasgow University. He published widely on the Celtic verb and syntax.


Scope and content/abstract: The papers comprise research papers and notes relating to the Celtic verb and syntax (see Donald G. Howells, 'The Gaelic of Carloway, Isle of Lewis: prepositions with verbal nouns' in James Carney and David Greene (editors), Celtic Studies. Essays in memory of Angus Matheson 1912-1962 (London, 1968), and D. Gwyon Howells, 'Absolute and conjunct again', Studia Celtica, 22/23 (1987/88)); notes in the form of index cards relating to the origin of Welsh phrases and idioms (boxes 15-16); translation and grammatical points on 'Y Gododdin' (box 6) and comments on the syntax of 'Breuddwyd Rhonabwy' (box 10); and photocopies of articles relating to syntax in other languages, in particular French and Indo- European (box 14).
