CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: Charles Arthur Uryan Rhys (1899-1962), 8th Baron Dynevor, was the son of the seventh baron who succeeded to the title in 1956. He was educated at Eton and the Royal Military College at Sandhurst. He was a captain in the Grenadier Guards during the years 1918-1920 and 1939-1945. He served in North Russia in 1919. He was the Conservative MP for the Romford division of Essex, 1923-1929, and for the Guildford division of Surrey, 1931-1935. He also served as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Stanley Baldwin, the Conservative Prime Minister, from 1927 until 1929. He also stood unsuccessfully as the Conservative candidate for North Islington in the 1945 general election. He was the chairman of the Cities of London and Westminster Conservative Association, 1948-1960, and served as its president in 1962.

CONTENT

Scope and content/abstract: The collection comprises: papers relating to Lord Dynevor's military career, including correspondence and papers relating to his military service in North Russia in 1919; diary accounts, 1922-1926, including accounts of his travels in North America and West Africa; papers, 1923-1947, concerning his political career, including seventeen letters, 1928-1947, from Stanley Baldwin to Lord Dynevor, and daily letters, 1928-1929, from Baldwin to King George V, and election addresses and leaflets; family letters, 1914-1941, and an incomplete autobiographical account by Lord Dynevor.
