CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: Sir Evan Davies Jones, civil engineer and public figure, was born at Pentower, Fishgurd. In his capacity of civil engineer he worked on the Severn Tunnel and the Manchester Ship Canal, eventually becoming managing director of the internationally-renowned Topham, Jones, & Railton firm. Evan Davies Jones served both his native county and country in numerous capacities. He was elected High Sheriff of Pembrokeshire from 1911 to 1912 and in 1932 was appointed Lord Lieutenant of the county; he also represented Pembrokeshire as Member of Parliament from 1918 to 1922. He served in a governing capacity within the Church in Wales, the University of Wales and the National Library of Wales, the latter institution benefitting from donations from Evan Davies Jones's extensive private library.

CONTENT

Scope and content/abstract: Manuscripts, [1453x1911], from the library of Sir Evan Davies Jones of Pentower, Fishguard. They comprise a fifteenth-century genealogical chronicle of Welsh and English rulers; an album of watercolour drawings of churches and other notable features of north and mid Wales compiled by the artist David Parkes; transcripts of monumental inscriptions in Tenby parish church; a journal of a tour of Wales, 1836; a volume of music, including works by John Parry ('Y Telynor Dall'); a volume of pedigrees transcribed by Edward Stanton Roberts; and seventeenth century Welsh poetry.
