Administrative/Biographical history: Hugh Ellis, Calvinistic Methodist minister and author, was the grandson of historian and writer Robert John Pryse ('Gweirydd ap Rhys'; 1807-1889) and the brother of the Reverend R. Pryse Ellis, Glascoed. He attended Bala Theological College and the University College of North Wales, Bangor, before beginning his ministering work at Pennal in April 1888, from where he transferred, in 1890, to Maentwrog. He was the author of Hanes Methodistiaeth Gorllewin Meirionydd, Volume III (Dolgellau, 1928) and of five memorial articles on John Robert Pryse ('Golyddan'; 1840-1862) published in the periodical Cymru.


Scope and content/abstract: Papers, [1851x1931], from the library of Hugh Ellis, containing material by or relating to Hugh Ellis and by members of his family. They include notebooks of Robert John Pryse ('Gweirydd ap Rhys'), grandfather of Hugh Ellis; autograph essays and scrapbooks compiled by John Robert Pryse ('Golyddan'), son of 'Gweirydd ap Rhys' and a scrapbook compiled by Catherine Prichard ('Buddug'), daughter of 'Gweirydd ap Rhys'; a short biography of 'Golyddan' by 'Gweirydd ap Rhys' for publication in Enwogion Cymru, draft articles on 'Golyddan' by Hugh Ellis, letters relating to 'Golyddan''s work and transcripts by Hugh Ellis of 'Golyddan''s poetry; and six volumes containing material collected by Hugh Ellis in the course of compiling Hanes Methodistiaeth Gorllewin Meirionydd (Dolgellau, 1928), which includes the original manuscript of the work.
