CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: The Montgomeryshire papers derive from early in the depositor's career, as a solicitor in Newtown. Some of the Ceredigion clients' files derive from the practice of Griffith Jones of Aberystwyth, solicitor (1880), later of Aberllolwyn, esq. (1890); other papers relate to his personal affairs. The remaining papers derive from the practice of R. Geddes Smith of Aberystwyth, solicitor (1882-1887), which became Smith Owen & Davies [Robert Geddes Smith, William Pierce Owen and William Davies] (1890), Smith, Davies & Evans [C. Denham Evans] (1910s), Smith Davies & Co., and Smith Jessop & Tomley (late 1960s-early 1970s).

CONTENT

Scope and content/abstract: Solicitors' personal papers and clients' papers accumulated by the depositor, including small groups of records relating to the Lan estate, p. Llanfallteg, co. Carm., the Nanteos and Penglais estates, co. Card., and other clients' papers, court papers etc., mainly north co. Card. and the Newtown area, co. Mont.

System of arrangement: Arranged at NLW into Castle Hill, Gogerddan, Lan, Nanteos and Penglais estates, and files of clients' papers, personal papers, loose material etc.

Conditions governing access: Readers consulting modern papers in the National Library of Wales are required to sign the 'Modern papers - data protection' form.

Conditions governing reproduction: Usual copyright laws apply.

ARCHIVAL INFORMATION

Appraisal, destruction and scheduling information: Some drafts and duplicates were destroyed. All clients' papers deposited at NLW have been retained.

Accruals: Accruels are not expected.

Archival history:

Immediate source of acquisition: Records relating to the Llanerchaeron estate were transferred to Ceredigion Archives.

ALLIED MATERIALS

Related material: The main archives of the Castle Hill, Gogerddan and Nanteos estates are held by NLW. The Roberts & Evans, Aberystwyth (Solicitors) Records at NLW also holds sizable collections of Nanteos and Penglais records. The main Llanerchaeron archive is held by Ceredigion Archives (as Llanaeron deeds and documents).
