CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: The Royal Cambrian Academy of Art was founded in Llandudno, Caernarfonshire, in 1881, and was granted the title 'Royal' in 1882. It draws its members from artists active in Wales, and aims to promote the arts through its regular exhibitions. It occupied Plas Mawr, in Conwy, Caernarfonshire, as a gallery from 1885, extending it in 1896. In 1994, it moved to a new building nearby. It is the most prestigious art institution in Wales, and its presidents have included Augustus John and Sir Kyffin Williams. The society adopted a memorandum and articles of association in 1951, and became a registered charity in 1963. It now uses the name 'Royal Cambrian Academy' in its marketing.
