CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: Dr Deian R. Hopkin (1944-) was born in Llanelli. He was educated at Ysgol Gymraeg Dewi Sant, Llanelli, the first Welsh-medium school to be established by a local authority. He then attended Llandovery College and the University of Wales Aberystwyth, graduating in history and then completing a PhD. He taught at the History Department of the University for twenty-four years and became Head of Department. In 1991 he became Dean of Human Sciences at City of London Polytechnic (now London Metropolitan University), and in 1996, Vice-Provost. He has published a number of works on Labour and press history and on the use of computers in history and he was founding editor of Llafur: Journal of Welsh Labour History. He has been a member of various councils, including the Court and Council of the National Library of Wales. His mother, Loti Rees Hughes (1908-1969), was a Labour Party activist and his stepfather W. Douglas Hughes (1899-1968), was an agent of the Llanelly Divisional Labour Party, Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, from 1936.

Scope and content/abstract: Papers, 1907-1988, mainly relating to the activities of the Labour Party in Carmarthenshire and Cardiganshire, 1917-1967, including: papers of the Llanelli Trades Council and Divisional Labour Party, including minute books, 1940-1967; accounts, financial papers and cash books, 1925-1967; correspondence, 1921-1967; miscellaneous papers, 1917-1967; press cuttings, 1926-1959; and general election papers, 1931-1964; political and professional papers of Loti Rees Hughes, including correspondence, minute books and press cuttings, 1927-1965; and personal and family papers, 1935-1969; papers of W. Douglas Hughes [c. 1920]-1968, including correspondence, 1932-1967; notebooks, c. [1920]-1966; and correspondence and papers relating to Carmarthenshire County Council, 1944-1968; together with the papers of Dr Deian R. Hopkin, 1907-1988, including correspondence, 1962-1988; and miscellaneous printed material, with some concerning the Labour Party, 1907-1984 and the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, 1960-1973.
