Administrative/Biographical history: Cardiganshire Antiquarian Society (Cymdeithas Hynafiaethwyr Sir Aberteifi) was formed in 1909 with the aim of studying the history, antiquities and folklore of Cardiganshire. It remained active until 1940, publishing annual Transactions of the Cardiganshire Antiquarian Society. In 1947, it was revived, and from 1950 has published the journal Ceredigion. It became a registered charity in 1965. In 1973, it changed its name to Ceredigion Antiquarian Socety (Cymdeithas Hynafiaethwyr Ceredigion), and in 2001 was re-named Ceredigion Historical Society (Cymdeithas Hanes Ceredigion). Meetings are held quarterly, with visits to places of historic interest. There is also an Archaeological Section with a programme of talks, excursions and excavations. The establishment of the County Museum, in 1972, was one of the Society's greatest achievements. Responsibility for the Museum was handed to the Ceredigion District Council in 1974.
