Extent: 0.050 cubic metres (142 items)

Name of creator(s): Massey family of Cornelyn, Llangoed

Administrative/Biographical history: William Massey (1817-1897) of Cornelyn, Anglesey, the eldest son of Richard Massey of Moston Hall, Cheshire, married Margaret Henrietta Maria of Rhosfawr, Caernarfonshire (d. 1899). William and Margaret's children died without issue, Cornelyn being sold in 1960 by the last male Massey. All of Cornelyn's pictures, furniture and other effects passed to Sybil Mary, granddaughter of Francis Elcocke Massey (1822-1898) of Poole Hall, Cheshire. Francis was the brother of Margaret Henrietta Maria (d. 1899). Sybil Mary married Col. Humphrey B. M. Wright, Conyers Place, Marnhull, Dorset.

Scope and content/abstract: Papers of the Cornelyn estate, 1860-1888, Anglesey; papers of other Massey family properties 1794-1862; family papers, 1787-1919, mainly social events, including letters and bundle of recipes; financial papers, 1791-1969; and papers regarding the office of sheriff and military commissions, 1864-1905.

Language/scripts of material: English

System of arrangement: Arranged chronologically by record type.

Conditions governing access: No restrictions

Conditions governing reproduction: Usual copyright regulations apply.

Finding aids: Hard copies of the catalogue are available at Archifdy Ynys Môn/Anglesey County Record Office, National Library of Wales and the National Register of Archives. It is the policy of Gwasanaeth Archifdy Ynys Môn/Anglesey County Archives Service to catalogue in the language of the document.

Appraisal, destruction and scheduling information: All records deposited at Anglesey County Record Office/Archifdy Ynys Môn have been retained.

Accruals: Accruals are not expected

Archival history: The collection is an extremely mixed collection and was originally in many folders and books with no apparent order. Except for one scrap album, all other papers have been removed from their original folders and sorted. As the documents appear to have originated with so many members of the Massey families of Cornelyn, Poole Hall, and Mostyn Hall, no attempt has been made to separate the Massey families.

Immediate source of acquisition: Private deposit.

Related material: There are papers of the Massey family in the Cheshire and Chester Archives and Local Studies Service, in DBC 2284 and D 5602. There are two bundles of accounts, an album and the Baron Hill estate copies of deeds for transactions with the Masseys of Cornelyn in the Archives, University of Wales Bangor; and Oriel Ynys Môn has a collection of botanical drawings by Gwendolen and Edith Massey of Cornelyn.
