Administrative/Biographical history: In the 19th century, voluntary schools were founded by the National Society (Church of England) and the British and Foreign Schools Society (Nonconformist). Following the Education Act 1870 Board schools, financed out of rates, were established. By the Education Act 1902, all of these schools came under the County Council as Local Education Authority. County (later Grammar) schools were provided by the Welsh Intermediate Education Act 1889, providing rate-aided public secondary education. Four county schools were established in Anglesey, at Amlwch, Holyhead, Llangefni and Menai Bridge (transferred from Beaumaris).


Scope and content/abstract: County governing Body and Local Education Authority minute books, 1890-1975; ledgers and other accounts, 1895-1954; correspondence, 1894-1966; reports, 1898-1977; miscellaneous, 1880-1983; school board minutes, 1871-1924; finance, 1872-1939; primary school log books, 1863-1999; admission and attendance registers, 1860-1988; cash books, 1849-1989; miscellaneous, 1849-1981; managers minutes, 1859-1984; school building plans, 1840-1972; evening schools, 1889-1914, special schools, 1906-1985; and secondary schools, 1852-1985.

Archival history: Most of the Education Records for Anglesey were deposited with the Director of Education by the head teachers of individual schools.
