CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: Grace Hughes (d. 1975) lived at Llainfeirig, Gwalchmai, Anglesey. She was the niece of John Hughes (d. 1934) and granddaughter of Owen Hughes (1815-1888). Her cousin, the Rev. John Hughes (fl. 1915-1934), fought in the First World War and then became a minister at Groes, Denbighshire. Grace Hughes ran Siop Newydd in Gwalchmai, selling butter, milk and eggs. She corresponded widely with her relatives, including Robert and Laura Roberts, Iowa, USA, and William Rowlands, British Columbia, Canada.

Scope and content/abstract: Papers of Grace Hughes, Anglesey, 1850-1975, including family papers, 1902-1968; family photographs, 1850-1950; notebooks and diaries, including details of people, emigrants and farming activities, 1889-1955; programmes and tickets, 1904-1926; memorial cards, 1872-1927; newspaper cuttings, 1910-1945; Grace Hughes memorial card, 1975; and minute book, Gwalchmai MC Literary Society, 1910-1916.
