Administrative/Biographical history: W. Ambrose Pretty was born and educated in Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll, Anglesey. He worked for Anglesey County Council and Gwynedd County Council for 49 years. He was Chief Clerk in the Water Department, 1946-1953. From 1953 until 1962 he was the registrar of births, marriages and deaths, and then Superintendent Registrar and Electoral Officer, 1962-1980. Pretty took an active interest in all work concerning the parish where he was born and was clerk for Llanfairpwll parish council, chairman of the local tennis club and Vice Chairman of the children's playing fields. He was also Secretary of the local committee of the National Eisteddfod of Wales. He was an active member of Rhosygad chapel, Treasurer for Anglesey Presbytery's Missionary Board and Assistant Secretary to the Anglesey Society for the Welfare of Handicapped People. He collected some papers relating to his father, Hugh J. Pretty (1881-1971), Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll, decorator, painter, paperhanger and undertaker, who was also active in Rhosygad CM Chapel. His son David A. Pretty (b. 1942), MA, is the author of Two centuries of Anglesey Schools, 1700-1902, and a contributor to the Transactions of the Anglesey Antiquarian Society and Field Club.
