Administrative/Biographical history: The Ordnance Survey developed from the Board of Ordnance which, in the late 18th century, was charged with the task of mapping the south coast of England following fears of a French invasion. During the 19th century, the original one-inch maps grew into a series covering the whole of Britain. The Ordnance Survey became a separate organization in 1841 and produced a six-inch series (1: 10,560). The county of Flintshire was originally mapped in this scale between 1871 and 1882. Between 1853-1896, a series of 25-inch (1: 2500) maps were created for the majority of the country. In the 20th century, the maps were revised periodically (2nd edition, Provisional edition, 3rd edition, 4th edition). Large-scale maps of urban areas were produced in the later 19th century, and in Flintshire these covered Holywell, Mold and Rhyl.
