CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: Hospital provision in Flintshire grew up piecemeal in the 19th and early 20th century until the establishment of the National Health Service in 1948. Some hospitals developed from infirmaries attached to workhouses, including Holywell Cottage Hospital and Flintshire Dispensary, and H M (Henry Morton) Stanley Hospital. The Royal Alexandra Hospital, in Rhyl, was built in 1894, originally as a children's hospital, and later a convalescent home; it is now a Community Hospital and a Family planning clinic. Clwyd and Deeside Hospital Management Committee was part of the administrative structure of the new Health Service. The collection also includes some material derived from Hawarden and St Asaph Poor Law Unions / Public Assistance Institutions, and Holywell Institution. From 1910 until 1948, the St Asaph Infectious Diseases Hospital (later St Asaph Isolation Hospital) also operated on St. Asaph Workhouse site.
