CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: The Diocese of St Asaph stretches from the borders of Chester in the East, to the Conwy Valley in the West. The diocese was created in the mid 6th century, and was subdivided into archdeaconries, rural deaneries and parishes. The Diocese owned and leased land in the counties of Flintshire, Denbighshire, Merionethshire, Montgomeryshire and Shropshire. In 1920, the Diocese became part of the Church in Wales.

System of arrangement: Arranged into four groups, by deposit: Group One, appointment, leases for land in Flintshire, Denbighshire, Merionethshire, Montgomeryshire, Shropshire, and Poor rates; Group Two, deeds relating to Flintshire, Denbighshire, and Shropshire; Group Three, appointments, licences, inhibitions, marriage licences, charities and bequests, faculties, churchyards, leases, valuations and tenancy, tithe maps and papers, and miscellaneous; and Group Four, leases, charities, and miscellaneous.
