Halkyn Mountain was one of the most important lead and zinc orefields in Wales. In 1897, the Holywell-Halkyn Mining and Tunnel Company was formed by a group of companies, which began to drive the Milwr Tunnel from the Dee Estuary at Bagillt in order to reduce the water table of Halkyn Mountain and thus allow deeper mining. In the mid 1970s, mining ended.
