Administrative/Biographical history: J. E. Messham was a teacher and historical researcher who has published a number of articles relating to the history of the Buckley district of Flintshire in the Journal of the Flintshire Historical Society. Coal mining, fire-clay brick and tile manufacture and a pottery industry led to the rapid development of the town of Buckley during the 19th century. Messham rescued records relating to Buckley industries, including some of the Catherall family, who owned a pottery, brick and tile making company during the 18th-19th centuries.


Scope and content/abstract: Papers collected by J. E. Messham, including papers relating to potteries and brickworks, 1805-1940s, consisting of Catherall family papers, 1805-1895; Ewloe Barn Brick and Tile Works, 1863-1911; and miscellaneous, 1870-1940s; papers relating to collieries in Flintshire, 1813-1932; historical notes, 1936-1948; maps, 1815-1920; photographs, [c. 1901]-[c. 1910]; printed pamphlets and articles, 1918-1953; and miscellaneous, 1795-1953.
