Administrative/Biographical history: Barry Jones (Stephen Barry Jones) (b. 1937) was a Labour MP, and was created Baron Jones (Life Peer) in 2001. He served as a Labour MP, 1970-2001, for Flint East, 1970-1983, and for the new constituency of Alyn and Deeside, 1983-2001. He was Opposition spokesman on employment, 1980-1983, and Chief Opposition spokesman on Wales (and a member of the Labour Shadow Cabinet), 1983-1987, and 1988-1992. Since 2001, he has been Deputy Speaker of the House of Lords. He was involved in campaigning to retain steelmaking at Shotton Steelworks in the 1970s (a campaign that ultimately failed in 1980) and was also active in issues relating to the Airbus project. He is married to Janet Jones (née Davies) and they have one son.


Scope and content/abstract: Papers of Barry Jones, 1967-1999, including correspondence, reports, submissions and newspaper cuttings relating to the campaign for retention of steelmaking at Shotton, 1967-1981; papers relating to other local and constituency issues, 1973-1995; papers relating to the May 1997 General Election, 1996-1997; parliamentary and constituency papers and correspondence, 1996-1999.
