CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: J. W. (Joseph William) Jones (1903-1985) of Rhyl, Flintshire, was a local historian. His father, Joseph Jones (d. 1944), worked as a cabinetmaker and upholsterer until 1911, when he became licensee of the Swan Inn, Rhyl. J. W. Jones served for two years as a war reserve constable in Liverpool City Police, and then took over the licence of the Swan Inn from 1944 until 1958. By the mid 1930s, he had developed an interest in the history of the Rhyl area. He was involved in local drama, and composed light music and popular songs. His local history researches led to the publication of Rhyl - the town and its people (1970). J. W. Jones died in 1985.
