Administrative/Biographical history: From 1896, steel was produced by John Summers & Sons steelworks, in Shotton, Flintshire. The Iron and Steel Act 1967 nationalised the majority of steel porduction in the UK, under the British Steel Corporation. BSC reviewed its operations, and in 1972, decided that the Shotton works would cease steel production, and would only process hot-rolled coil from other steelworks. In 1973, a campaign by the workers and the local community to prevent the closure was established, and government decisions to close the works were reversed twice, under pressure from the Shotton Steelworks Action Committee. The Committee had links with the National Steel/Steelworkers' Action Committee, Deeside and District Steel Campaign Committee, the TUC and its Steel Committee, the Steel Campaign Committee, Flint Borough Council Tenants' Association, and ISTC (Iron and Steel Trades Confederation), Shotton branch. In 1979, iron and steel making was finally phased out at the Shotton steelworks, and over 8,000 workers were made redundant. The steelworks remained in operation, under BSC, British Steel, and now Corus.
