Administrative/Biographical history: Roman Catholicism in England and Wales was a small, persecuted minority between the 16th-18th centuries. Most Catholics had Anglican burials, and private baptism and marriage services, and few Catholic registers begin before the mid 18th century. There were several Roman Catholic chapels in Holywell, Flintshire, during the 18th and 19th centuries, including the Old Star Chapel and the Cross Keys Chapel. Following the Catholic Emancipation Act 1829, Catholics were allowed to worship as they pleased and many more churches were built. The area fell within the Catholic Diocese of Wrexham.
