CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: R. J. Dean (fl. 1969-1980) collected plans of many railway companies. In 1923, railway companies in Britain were amalgamated into four main groups, three of which operated lines in Wales. The London and North Western Railway, which became part of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) in 1923, operated the Chester and Holyhead Railway, and various branch railways in north Wales. The Great Western Railway (GWR) ran several lines in north and mid Wales. The Wrexham, Mold and Connah's Quay Railway had been acquired by Great Central Railways in 1904 and became part of London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) in 1923. Following nationalisation of the railways in 1946, north and mid Wales became part of British Railways, London Midland Region. Dean's main interests were the pre-1923 standard- and narrow-gauge railways.
