CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: The administrative work of counties was carried out by Justices of the Peace in Quarter Sessions until the late nineteenth century. In 1888, elected county councils were created, whose duties included general administration, civil protection, concern for buildings of historical interest, the fire brigade, roads and bridges, social services, foods and education. In 1972, Dyfed County Council was created from the counties of Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire and Cardiganshire. In 1996, Dyfed was abolished, and the unitary authority of Carmarthenshire County Council was created.

CONTENT

Scope and content/abstract: Records relating to Carmarthenshire County Council, 1837-1997, including register of buildings licensed as places of meeting for religious worship and for the solemnization of marriages, 1837-1934; county council minute books, 1889-1974; Carmarthenshire County Council committee minutes, 1889-1974; lists of Aldermen, County Councillors, and committees, 1933-1958; register of factories producing margarine, 1939-1954; records relating to the Festival of Wales, 1958; records regarding buildings of historical interest in Carmarthenshire, [1950s]-[1970s]; record regarding fire brigade history, 1948-1967; photographs of Bridge Street/Castle area of Carmarthen, [c. 1960]; and printed material, 1956-1974; Carmarthenshire Social Care Plan, 1997; and articles of agreement between Carmarthenshire County Council and others, 1939-1966.

Conditions governing access: The file of staff appointments, 1948-1973, is closed because of the personal nature of some of this material until 2003. The records of Arthur Street Children's Home, Ammanford, 1950-1970 is closed until 2050. The ledger for people in residential homes for the Elderly, 1967-1970 and ledger of payments collected for children in care, 1967-1970, are not to be produced.

Archival history: The records of the Motor Vehicle Licensing Department were transferred from Carmarthen District Audit on 20th February 1980.

Immediate source of acquisition: Deposited between 1964 and c1984 by various Departmental heads of both Carmarthenshire County Council and Dyfed County Council.
