CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: The Buckley family acquired the Castell Gorfod estate when James Bevan sold it to a James Buckley; the family came from Lancashire originally. The Wesleyan minister, Rev. Thomas Buckley, son of Mark and Alice Buckley, settled in Llanelli, and had a son, James Buckley (1802-1883) who came to live at Penyfai. He married Elizabeth Price in 1834. The Penyfai estate was sold by the Buckley family between 1920 and 1922. Some of the papers relate to hunting: Captain William Howell Buckley (b. 1896) was the Master of the Carmarthenshire Hunt. Muriel Buckley, nee Howell, died in 1928.

Scope and content/abstract: Papers of the Buckley family of Castell Gorfod, Carmarthenshire, 1689-1962, including records relating to the rabbit problem in Carmarthenshire, 1934-1957; birth certificate of William Howell Buckley, 1896, hunting diaries, 1924-1926; material relating to the Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire Otter Hunt and the Carmarthenshire Fox Hounds, 1950-1955; scrapbooks of newspaper cuttings, [c.1800]-1890; letters of condolence relating to the death of Muriel Buckley, 1928; plan of Penyfai, 1828; love letters written by James Buckley to Elizabeth, 1831-1833; recipe books, [19th century]-[20th century]; and hunting journal of the Carmarthenshire Hunt, 1955-1962.
