CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: The earliest named owner of Derwydd, Carmarthenshire, is Rhydderch ap Hywel ap Bedo in 1500. Later, Elizabeth Lloyd inherited the estate and married Sir Thomas Stepney of Llanelli; the estate passed to Elizabeth Brigitta Stepney who, in 1767, married Joseph Gulston. A second Joseph Gulston (fl 1827-1860) ran the estate and was also involved in local turnpike trusts and administration of the Poor Law. Alan Stepney-Gulston (b. 1844) had a keen interest in his ancestry, and in 1886, adopted the additional surname Stepney by Deed Poll, and became Alan Stepney Stepney-Gulston. His intention was to use Derwydd as a residence and to restore it to its former glory. In 1998, Derwydd estate was sold.
