Administrative/Biographical history: From the 14th century, the town and borough of Cardigan, Cardiganshire, was ruled by the Constable of the Castle, appointed by the monarch. In 1653, the first mayor of the borough of Cardigan is recorded. In 1835, after the Municipal Corporation Act, the burgesses became responsible for the poor rate, and the borough was reformed. In 1858, R. D. Jenkins was elected Mayor, and the Borough Council was formed. The Council acted as Port Sanitary authority and later performed the functions of an Urban District Council. Cardigan Town Council became Cardigan Community Council in 1974.

Archival history: Most of the records of the Cardigan Union were transferred to the Record Office with the Boards of Guardians records from NLW in 1986.

Immediate source of acquisition: Deposited by the clerk to Cardigan Town Council between 1974 and by Ceredigion County Museum in 1990.
