Administrative/Biographical history: Aberayron (Aberaeron) Poor Law Union, Llanddewi Aberarth, Cardiganshire, was formed in 1837. An elected Board of Guardians, representing its fourteen constituent parishes, oversaw its operation. The Union Workhouse was built in Aberaeron, later converted into a hospital. Responsibility for welfare was passed to Cardiganshire County Council in the 1930s.

Archival history: A series of Cardiganshire Boards of Guardians records was transferred to the Cardiganshire Record Office from the National Library Wales in 1984 as part of ACC.543. A Treasurer's account for Aberaeron Union, 1929-1930 (ex SRD/4/531) was transferred from Ceredigion District Council, October 1985.
