CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: Aberystwyth Poor Law Union was formed in 1837, administered by a Board of Guardians representing the parishes of the Union. The Board of Guardians was abolished in 1930, and the workhouse became a Public Assistance institution, administered by Cardiganhsire County Council. The workhouse site is now occupied by Bronglais Hospital.

Archival history: A series of Cardiganshire Boards of Guardians records was transferred to the Cardiganshire Record Office from the National Library Wales in 1984 as part of ACC.543. Aberystwyth Union ACC.544 was transferred from Aberystwyth Library 23 January 1986; a rate book for the parish of Aberystwyth, 1880, ACC.527, was transferred from Ceredigion District Council in October 1985.
