CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: The 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act creating a system of Poor Law Unions, groups of parishes sharing responsibility for providing workhouses. The Cardigan Union was formed in 1837, covering 26 parishes in Cardiganshire and Pembrokshire. It consutructed a workhouse (from 1931, St Dogmael's Public Assistance Institution) at Albro Castle, St Dogmaels, Pembrokeshire. The contributing parishes were: in Cardiganshire, Aberporth, Blaenporth, Llandygwyd, Llangoedmore, Llechryd, Mount, St Mary's in the Borough of Cardigan, Tremaine, and Verwick; and in Pembrokeshire, Bayvil, Bridell, Cilgerran, Dinas, Eglwyscrw, Llanfair Nant gwyn, Llanfihangel Penbedw, Llantwyd, Llanychlwydog, Maenordewi, Melinau, Molygrove or Trewyddel, Monnington or Eglwys Wythiel, Nevern, Newport, St Dogmaels and Whitchurch or Eglwyswen. In 1935, the responsibilities of the Union were transferred to the County Councils.

Scope and content/abstract: Records of the Board of Guardians, including minute books, 1837-1884; letter books, 1840-1868; parochial and general ledgers, 1842-1889; articles of apprenticeship of poor children, 1852-1899; contracts for land at poor rates, 1851-1857; and records of the Public Assistance Institution, including letter books, 1913-1935; postcard books, 1927-1935; files of correspondence, 1932-1934; admission and discharge books, 1857-1935; master's report books, 1907-1935; master's day books, 1909-1929; relief lists, 1861-1932; medical officer's report books, 1901-1935; registers of births and deaths, 1887-1935; visitors' books, 1895-1935; provisions consumption account books, 1912-1935; and miscellaneous printed books.
