Administrative/Biographical history: Tregaron Rural District Council, Cardiganshire, was created in 1894. Following adjustments made in 1934, it comprised the parishes of Betws Leucu, Blaenpennal, Caron-is-Clawdd, Caron-uwch-Clawdd, Gartheli, Gwnnws Isaf, Gwnnws Uchaf, Gwynfil, Llanbadarn Odwyn, Lledrod Lower, Lledrod Upper, Llangeitho, Nantcwnlle and Ysbyty Ystwyth. The council comprised councillors and a chairman, elected for three years. They originally took over responsibility for local sanitation from the local sanitary authorities and their responsibilities included sanitary services, sewerage, refuse collection, maintaining local roads, cemeteries, parks, and licensing of public entertainments, water supply and later housing. Rural District Councils were administered by a number of committees and by appointed officers including a clerk, treasurer, medical officer of health, surveyor and sanitary inspector. Tregaron Rural District Council was abolished in 1974 following local government reorganisation, being absorbed into Ceredigion District Council. It had inherited some records from the Tregaron Poor Law Union Board of Guardians.
