CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: The Mid-Wales Health Authority was established in 1948, taking over responsibility for Aberystwyth Infirmary and Cardiganshire General Hospital, Cardiganshire Local Optical Committee. In about 1974, the authority was re-organised into the Dyfed Health Authority, later the Dyfed Powys Health Authority, which is divided into four groups, including Ceredigion Local Health Group. The East Dyfed Health Authority was transferred to the Ceredigion and Mid Wales National Health Service Trust in 1995. In April 2003, Health Authorities in Wales ceased to exist and were replaced by Local Health Boards, aligned on the unitray authorities. The Aberystwyth Infirmary and Cardiganshire General Hospital was previously known as the Aberystwyth Dispensary. In the 19th century, the counties of Cardiganshire, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire discharged their obligations for lunatics by providing the Joint Counties Asylum in Carmarthen.
