Administrative/Biographical history: The International Red Cross movement was founded by Henry Dunant (1828-1910), of Switzerland, to train volunteers to provide humanitarian aid in times of war. The International Committee of the Red Cross was established in Geneva in 1863. The British National Society for Aid to the Sick and Wounded in War was formed in 1870. In 1905, it became the British Red Cross Society and was granted a Royal Charter by its first President, Queen Alexandra. The Voluntary Aid Scheme was introduced in 1909 and led to the formation of Voluntary Aid Detachments locally to provide medical support in times of war. In 1919, the movement extended its activities to include more general health and welfare provisions, and in 1924 the Junior Red Cross was established to encourage the participation of young people in its work.
